I have been a garage / home gym / outdoor exercise dude for decades. I use logs, rocks, tires, concrete, ropes, chains , whatever.
My exercise life started in 1953 when I was between 5th & 6th grades. Started at age 10. I did not care about team sports and did not understand them. I started tree climbing for sport and got good at it. Junior high I got so I could walk on my hands. Got in a YMCA about 1957
and saw two kettlebells and an Olympic 310 pound York barbell set. Got strong in high school.
Fast forward my work was always physical. Jackhammer, tree work, landscaping. Work was always exercise and sometimes cardio. Got into running in 1977 when I heard about a five mile race coming up. Thirty-nine years later I am running trail races mostly and a few road events.
To this day I never watched a football , baseball, or basketball game on TV or in person. I never missed a thing as I could do my things any place.I put a 1″ manila rope in a chestnut tree a while ago in my outdoor gym. I foot locked up it this morning. A few more goodies and I will have a multi-workout fitness path just behind the house.
When the summer hits and kids are out of school I will be at sixty-three years of non-stop exercise. Getting big is not the goal, staying fit and strong is. I have yet to get in real shape. Perhaps by year’s end I will be there.
